Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam on Monday announced a zero-tolerance policy against harassment of businesses and illegal financial transactions in the issuance and renewal of trade licences.
A revenue department official of the DSCC, Mostafa Nuruddin Ahmed, has been relieved of his duties following allegations of harassment and bribery in connection with the issuance and renewal of trade licences.
DSCC administrator pledges to turn city areas greener
He has also been asked to explain in writing within three working days why administrative and legal action should not be taken against him.
Mostafa Nuruddin Ahmed was serving as a licence and advertisement supervisor at the Miscellaneous Collection Branch of the DSCC Revenue Department in Zone-4.
A meeting was held jointly by the DSCC and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) on Sunday to discuss local business and trade, law and order, traffic congestion and improvement of trade licence services.
At the meeting, Moulvibazar Business Association President Mohammad Ali Bhutto alleged that during an on-the-spot trade licence renewal camp held on June 23 and 24, the licence supervisor collected cash from businesspeople on the assurance of renewing 22 trade licences for the 2025-26 fiscal year.
However, despite more than one and a half months having passed, the licences were not renewed.
When the businesses later contacted him by phone, he continued to delay the matter on various pretexts.
Immediately after hearing the allegation, the DSCC administrator ordered stringent action.
Following an initial verification of the allegation, Mostafa Nuruddin Ahmed was relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
DSCC Chief Revenue Officer Jonaed Kabir Sohag said the city corporation would maintain a “zero tolerance” policy towards irregularities, corruption and harassment in citizen and business services.
He said further legal action would be taken against the accused after receiving his written response to the show-cause notice.
