The footpath in front of Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital has been transformed into a visually appealing, pedestrian-friendly space under a special initiative by the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), with authorities calling for collective efforts to ensure its long-term preservation.

Once plagued by illegal encroachment, waste and foul odour, the footpath now features rows of flower pot, ornamental plants and vibrant wall graffiti, creating a welcoming environment for patients and visitors.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam, formally inaugurated the eviction and beautification programme on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking as the chief guest, he said, “Dhaka is the face of Bangladesh. Keeping it clean, liveable and aesthetically pleasing is a shared responsibility. This initiative aims to provide mental comfort to patients and their attendants coming to the hospital.”

He emphasised that the this environment must be preserved through coordinated efforts involving Dhaka University, police, city authorities and the media.

Implemented under the supervision of DSCC’s Waste Management Department, the pilot project covers almost 1,350 feet from Dhaka University’s Mokarram Bhaban to Chankharpul. It includes mural paintings, installation of 550 flower pots and planting of 650 ornamental trees.

Additionally, 50 seating benches have been placed for the attendants and construction of two hill-shaped decorative structures is underway.

Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Mahbubur Rahman Talukder said the initiative is a pilot project, and if it receives positive public response and cooperation, similar efforts will be expanded to other busy footpaths across DSCC areas.

Among others present at the inauguration were DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam, Director of Dhaka Medical College Brig Gen Md Asaduzzaman, and senior officials of the corporation.
