The Dhaka University (DU) unit of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) today submitted a memorandum to the university administration, placing a six-point proposal aimed at improving cleanliness, sanitation and environmental sustainability across the campus.
The memorandum, addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, was submitted by DU JCD President Ganesh Chandra Roy Saha and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon.
In the memorandum, JCD said that although Dhaka University has long been recognized as one of the country's most scenic campuses with a pleasant natural environment, the condition of many academic buildings, residential halls, cafeterias and adjoining areas has deteriorated due to inadequate waste management and poor sanitation.
The organization said maintaining a clean campus is not only essential for preserving the university's image but also for ensuring a healthy academic environment. Referring to the government's emphasis on environmental protection and civic awareness, JCD said the country's premier university should play a leading role in implementing sustainable environmental practices.
To address the issue, DU JCD proposed the installation of at least one dustbin every 150 to 200 metres across the campus, with separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. It also recommended placing waste bins in front of every stalls and ensuring regular cleaning while encouraging students to reduce the use of single-use plastics by adopting reusable alternatives.
The memorandum further called for cleanliness drives in academic and residential buildings at least twice a month with active student participation to raise environmental awareness. It also urged the administration to ensure regular inspections of halls and academic buildings.
Among its other recommendations, JCD demanded improved sanitation facilities, including toilets and washrooms, in all residential and academic buildings. It also proposed bringing cafeterias and restaurants under a central monitoring system to ensure food quality, hygiene and environmental standards through regular inspections.
The organization also called for expanding green spaces by planting new trees and ensuring proper maintenance of existing ones.
Expressing its willingness to assist through voluntary initiatives, DU JCD urged the university administration to coordinate with the Dhaka South City Corporation and other relevant authorities to implement the proposals and ensure a cleaner, healthier and more environmentally sustainable campus.
