A Cumilla court on Sunday sentenced an elderly man to five years in prison in a case filed for attempting to rape a seven-year-old child.
The court also fined 75-year-old Ali Akbar alias Kailla Tk 10,000.
Judge Md Abdul Hannan of the Cumilla Child Violence Tribunal handed down the verdict, said State lawyer Abul Kalam Faraz.

According to the prosecution, on the afternoon of April 5, 2025, the seven-year-old child went to take a bath in the Viktala Miji Bari area of Elliotganj South Union in Daudkandi Upazila. At that time, Ali Akbar took her to a room in his house and tried to violate her.
Hearing the child's screams, her mother went to the spot and rescued her.
Locals detained the accused Ali Akbar and informed the police. After the incident, the child was taken to the Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex. After receiving primary treatment there, he was sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment. The child was treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The child's mother Nurun Nahar filed a case against Ali Akbar alias Kailla at Daudkandi Model Police Station.
