Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday urged the media to remain vigilant so that wrong information is not disseminated in the contest of publishing news before others.
He made the call while speaking as chief guest at a book unveiling programme – ‘Swapner Sarothi Shah Alamgir’ – in memory of late journalist Shah Alamgir at the National Press Club, said a PID handout.
He said that currently there is a competition among newspapers to release stories before anyone else. But during such competition, the quality of news is damaged at times.
“This is particularly the case for online news outlets that compete among themselves for releasing stories before anyone else … Objective news is not published on many occasions. Besides, stories with wrong and untrue information are released,” he said.
He said the government invited application for bringing online portals under registration and got more than 3,500 applications. Minister Hasan said the government is also trying to bring ITTV and online televisions under registration.
