A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent a former Awami League lawmaker Khandaker Azizul Huq Arzu, who was elected from Panba-2 constituency in 2014 election, in a rape case filed last year.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 Judge Begum Shamsunnahar passed the order after the defendant surrendered through his lawyer before the court, Asgar Swapon, a special public prosecutor of the court, said.
Earlier, the court held a hearing on a bail petition filed by the accused while the court sent him to jail after rejecting the bail prayer.
On April 22 last year, the case was filed against him at the court.
Later, the court asked the Police Bureau of Investigation (PIB) to investigate the incident after recording statement from the victim.
On January 16 this year, the court issued an arrest warrant for the accused after accepting the investigation report submitted by the PIB.
After the investigation, the PIB submitted the investigation report to the court on January 5, narrating that the allegations were found true.
According to the case statement, the victim got introduced to the accused through her paternal uncle in December, 2001.
Identifying himself as a widower, he allured the woman of getting married but actually he had a wife and a daughter.
Later, they got married on December 10, 2003 and became parents of a baby girl in 2008.
Though the accused pressurised the victim to leave the baby, she denied it.
The accused took around Tk 18 lakh and 15 vori of gold from the victim in the name of buying an apartment for her in phases.
The former lawmaker allegedly tried several times to kill her when she raised voice to get their due rights.
The investigation report said the accused is the father of the daughter which was proved through a DNA test.
