Mobile financial service Nagad is playing a key role in the government’s newly launched Family Card programme, which aims to economically empower women heads of households and boost their confidence.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the programme on Tuesday morning at the Korail slum area. Under the pilot phase, a total of BDT 16.2 million has been disbursed through Nagad to 6,451 families across 13 districts.
The launch in a densely populated area like Korail has generated considerable enthusiasm among residents. Speaking at the ceremony, the Prime Minister said that distributing allowances via a direct digital system would prevent misappropriation and ensure the benefits reach genuinely underprivileged families.
Nagad officials expressed gratitude to the government, particularly the Prime Minister, for selecting the mobile financial service of Bangladesh Post Office to distribute funds for such a priority project.
Muhammad Zahidul Islam, Head of Media and Communications at Nagad, said, “We are proud that the government has reaffirmed its commitment to fulfilling promises within less than a month of assuming office. Being a partner in this initiative is an honor for the entire Nagad family, and we sincerely thank the Prime Minister for this opportunity.”
Under this government election pledge, financially vulnerable families in districts and city corporation areas across the country receive BDT 2,500 per month. In the initial phase, the programme is implemented in 15 wards across city corporations, municipalities, and unions in 13 districts, with a large portion of the funds already distributed through Nagad.
Data of 51,805 extremely poor and lower-middle-income families were collected, and after thorough field verification, government employees, pensioners, and those receiving multiple benefits were excluded.
Priority has been given to women-headed households to enhance economic empowerment, and the initiative is expected to significantly improve living standards of low-income communities.
