“Haor lease is granted as part of government policy to protect the fish... Due to the lease system, there are plenty fish still available in Haor areas,” he said.
“The fishermen unions near Haor areas should collaboratively ask for lease instead of loaning money individually,” he added.
He made the remarks at a roundtable discussion on leasing system for fishing in Haor areas jointly arranged by Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) and Bangladesh Resource Center for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) at Jatiya Press Club.
State minister said, “Haor lease is generally granted to a fisheries association. They lease it to another in the hope of earning a little. Due to the lease, the excessive fishing is stopped there, so the fish gets bigger.”
He mentioned that all kinds of fish are available in the market because the effective decision of 65 days fishing ban in the sea.
“The government is taking substantial measures to save the rivers,” he added.
Former MP Chhabi Biswas, Barsik Director Syed Ali Biswas and Supreme Court lawyer Subrata Kumar Pal also spoke among others at the seminar presided over by POBA Chairman Abu Nasser Khan.
