A court in Magura on Wednesday sent former Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Biplob Kumar Nath and Sub-Inspector (SI) Ismail Hossain to jail in connection with the murder of BNP leader Moshiar Rahman.
Judge Barnali Rani of the Shalikha Cognizance Court rejected their bail petitions and ordered them sent to jail.
Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain said on Wednesday night that police arrested them Tuesday night while they were serving with the Barishal River Police.
Police Inspector Md Kamruzzaman, the investigating officer in the case, said Moshiar Rahman, vice-president of the ward-level BNP in Shatkhali Union of Shalikha upazila, was taken from his home in Chhaygharia village on February 15, 2015, by the then OC of Shalikha Police Station, Biplob Kumar Nath, and SI Ismail Hossain.
They subsequently shot and killed him, the investigating officer said.
Police later filed a case against Moshiar himself, portraying the incident as a crossfire, or extrajudicial killing, at Shalikha Police Station, he added.
Hasina Begum, wife of the slain BNP leader, said she could not file a case during the Awami League government's tenure.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5, she filed a murder case with the court on October 1, 2024, naming several people, including the two accused, she said.
Following the complaint, the court directed Shalikha Police Station to register the case.
The two officers have also been accused of killing BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami activists in alleged crossfire incidents while serving at different police stations in Jhenaidah, Magura, Kushtia, Alamdanga, Chuadanga and Meherpur.
Biplob Kumar Nath has also been accused of extorting hundreds of crores of taka from BNP and Jamaat leaders in Jhenaidah by threatening them with crossfire, according to allegations.
He is the son-in-law of Mohit Kumar Nath, president of Jashore Sadar Upazila Awami League, and owns a house near Bejpara Puja Mandir in Jashore city, according to the information provided.
