A garage mechanic was killed after an unidentified speeding vehicle hit him in the Konapara area of Jatrabari in the capital on Monday night.
The deceased was identified as Falu Mia, 46, son of Abdul Matin. He lived with his family in Purba Kadamtali.
Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Sajibur Rahman said they received information through the national emergency service number 999 and found the man critically injured on the road in front of Molla College in Konapara.
He was rescued and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctor declared him dead around midnight.
The police officer said preliminary inquiries suggested that an unidentified speeding vehicle struck Falu as he was walking home after work and fled the scene around 8pm.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area to identify the vehicle involved, he said.
Legal proceedings are underway, and the body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
