Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Monday said the current government is exercising a culture of accountability by raising its first 180 days' activities and achievements before the nation.
“Today, we completed 180 days of our government and we officially organized a programme at the Prime Minister's Office to inform the nation about what we had promised, what we had announced, how much we had been able to accomplish in 180 days, and by saying this, we have also practiced a culture of accountability,” Swapon said.
The minister made the remark while addressing a book launching ceremony at the National Press Club. He unveiled the cover of the book titled 'Bangladeshi Nationalism: Tarique Rahman and Current Context’ composed by writer and researcher Ruhul Amin.
Focusing on the newly launched book, Swapan said immediately after the country’s independence, the then leader of the House Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in the first Parliament asked the non-Bengali community to be Bengalis, which created instability in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Against that backdrop, the Information Minister said Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman structured the philosophy of Bangladeshi nationalism and introduced a concept of national identity based on citizenship rather than religion or ethnicity.
“Bangladeshi nationalism, based on this national identity, has proved even today to be our only solution, our only identity and our only source of harmony,” he said.
He said the historic contribution of the party’s founder, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, would have an enduring impact for thousands of years. “As long as this land exists, his influence will remain,” said Swapon.
Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal’s Chief Coordinator Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas, MP, also spoke at the event presided over by BNP Chairman’s adviser Nazmul Haque Nannu.
