The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the class VIII student of Dhamrai Barnamala School in Dhaka, Sheikh Sadi should not be compensated Tk 1.5 crore for losing his two arms in electrocution.

The HC bench of Justice Justice K. M. Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury issued the rule and asked the authorities concerned of the government and Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) to respond to the rule within seven days.

Advocate Shishir Monir stood for the petitioner.

Advocate Sishir Monir said Sheikh Sadi went to a pond inside Shansiri Residential area to take a bath on July 15, 2022.

When he jumped off the pond, he got electrocuted by the live electric wire hanging over the pond. Soon after the incident, a fire broke out on his two arms.

Later, he was taken to the local hospital where the doctors Sheikh Hasina Burn Unit and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka where the doctors severed his two arms from his shoulder through amputation.

The electric wire has long been hanging over the pond but despite repeated complaints, the authorities concerned did not pay any heed.

On March 2, Sadi’s father filed a petition to the BREB seeking compensation. Getting no response from them, a legal notice has been served of Tk 1.5 crore as compensation on May 2.

After getting no response from BREB, Advocate Sishir Monir filed the writ petition.

The writ also sought to bear the medical expenses and transplant of limbs. It also sought specialized facilities for Sadi for his education and rehabilitation.
