HC orders inquiry over mistaken identity of a jailed man

The High Court on Tuesday directed a subordinate court to oversee investigation over jail sentencing of an apparently innocent man instead of the convicted criminal in a case who has the same name in Lalmohan upazila of Bhola.
The Judge of Dhaka Special Tribunal-2 has been asked to conduct the inquiry and pass the necessary order in this regard within two weeks.
The virtual bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice SM Kuddus Zaman passed the order after hearing a writ petition.
Earlier on August 22, a media report claimed that Md Liton has been in jail for nine months in place of the original convicted Md Liton, who has been absconding after being released on bail.
According to the newspaper report, three people –Liton, Shamim and Arshad were arrested in a drug case on June 28, 2009 and later they fled after securing bail.
On October 22, 2014, Dhaka Special Tribunal-2 sentenced them for two years jail, it said.
Police arrested wrong Liton on December 7, in 2019, the report claimed.
Advocate ZI Khan, Eyahida Jaman and Md Shahinuzzaman stood for the writ petitioner Md Liton and rights organization, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) who had filed it on August 24.
