The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has filed an appeal with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking the death penalty for Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) President and former Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, who was awarded 10 years’ imprisonment for his involvement in crimes against humanity committed during the July 2024 mass uprising.
ICT Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said the appeal was filed with the section concerned of the Appellate Division on Monday.
Earlier, on June 30, ICT-2 sentenced Inu to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment on each of three charges in the case. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning he will serve 10 years in total.
According to the tribunal’s judgment, charges No. 3, 6 and 7 brought against Inu were proved. He was also fined Tk 100,000 on each of two charges.
The tribunal found Inu responsible for the serious injury, torture and persecution of victims, including Raisul Haque, on political grounds. He was also convicted of conspiracy, instigation, and aiding and abetting crimes against humanity.
However, the tribunal acquitted Inu of charges No. 1, 2, 4, 5 and 8, saying those charges were not proved.
Through the appeal, the prosecution has sought to heighten Inu's sentence to death on the charges on which he was convicted, as well as on the charges of which he was acquitted.
The appeal will now be considered by the Appellate Division.
A total of eight charges were brought against Inu in the case.
