Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Nazrul Islam Khan has urged people to remain patient, saying it will take time to clear the “mess” accumulated over 17 years of authoritarian rule in the name of democracy.
“I would request everyone to have a little patience. It takes time to remove 17 years of accumulated mess,” he said.
He also said six months is not enough time to run the state and called on opposition political parties to come forward in a spirit of cooperation.
Nazrul made the remarks while addressing a discussion arranged to mark the 11th death anniversary of former prime minister and former Jatiya Party (JP) chairman Kazi Zafar Ahmed at the National Press Club in the capital.
“For nearly 17 years, there was no democracy in this country. Ultimately, it became authoritarian rule and fascism in the name of democracy,” he said.
“The administration has been destroyed, and the current BNP government is now facing difficulties in getting its work done,” he said.
Nazrul said six months is not sufficient time for running the state and urged opposition parties to decide whether to launch movements after considering whether six months is enough to address the challenges inherited by the government.
The Prime Minister’s adviser said the government is trying to resolve various crises and problems facing the country.
He urged people, political parties, academics, journalists and intellectuals to provide suggestions if they believe the government could resolve any particular problem more quickly or effectively through a different approach.
“What I would request is that there are many problems that the government is trying to solve. if you have such suggestions, let us know. we encourage those suggestions, we will try to act accordingly,” he added.
He said the government would stand by the people who brought the BNP to power through their votes.
He expressed confidence that the government would fulfil the expectations of the people who elected it with high hopes, under the leadership of our Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
