Islamic University (IU) authorities in Kushtia on Monday postponed an inter-department football tournament after two separate clashes between students of four departments left more than 10 students injured.
The first clash took place around 11:00am between students of the Accounting and Information Systems and Islamic History and Culture departments following an altercation over a throw-in during a match.
The dispute reportedly began after students of the two departments exchanged words over the ball. The situation later escalated, leading to a clash between the students.
Later in the day, students of the Pharmacy and Biomedical Engineering departments were involved in another clash around 3:00pm over allegations of sledging during a match.
More than 10 students of the four departments were injured in the two clashes.
Following the clashes, the university authorities decided to postpone the inter-department football tournament.
Prof Dr Amtaj Hossain, pro-vice-chancellor of the university and convener of the tournament committee, confirmed the development to UNB in the evening.
“We have suspended the tournament following the two incidents. A probe committee has been formed to investigate the incidents. We will decide on further action after receiving its report,” he said.
