A case has been filed against four named individuals, including a local Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader, and 180-200 unnamed ones, over the murder of self-proclaimed ‘Pir’ Abdur Rahman, also known as Shamim Reza and Jahangir, who was killed in a mob attack at his shrine in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia.
Victim’s brother Fazlur Rahman filed the case at Daulatpur Police Station in the early hours of Tuesday, said its Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman.
The accused are Khaja Ahmed, a leader of the upazila unit of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former President of the district unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, local Jamaat activist Rajib Mistri, Khelafat Majlish upazila unit President Asaduzzaman Asad, and Safi, a madrasah teacher.
However, no arrest has yet been made in connection with the murder, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Bheramar Circle) Delwar Hossain.
Contacted, upazila Jamaat Amir Belal Uddin denied the allegation of party men’s involvement in the incident, saying they will face it legally.
Accused Khaja Ahmed said he went to bring the body of Shamim Reza as per the request of his brother.
He also claimed that many leaders of union BNP, Jubo Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal were present at the scene but no one was made accused in the case.
Shamim Reza, 65, was beaten and hacked to death on Saturday afternoon at his shrine known as “Shamim Baba’s Darbar Sharif” in Philipnagar union.
According to locals, an old video from 2023 resurfaced, leading to allegations of blasphemy and triggering the attack.
Three of his followers– Zubayer, Mohon Ali and Jamirun Nesa – were also injured in the incident.
