The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) Monday arrested Abdur Rahman alias Chandu Mia, a member of JMB's Isaba group, an absconding death sentenced convict of the sensational Khadem murder case of Rangpur in 2015.
ATU confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, issuing a press release.
Following a long investigation, a team of the ATU Monday evening conducted a drive in Denda area under Savar police station evening and made the arrest.
On November 10, 2015, at around 10.30 pm, JMB members hacked and slaughtered Khadem Rahmat Ali with a sharp weapon near Chaitar Mor under Kaunia thana.
Later Advocate Shafiqul Islam, son of the deceased, filed a murder case against unidentified accused at the Kaunia Police Station.
Upon investigation, police found evidence of JMB members being involved in the murder.
The deceased Khadem Rahmat Ali was a follower of Sureshwari Tarika. Declaring the graves of his parents as mausoleum, he used to conduct zikr with his followers every Thursday. According to JMB members, Rahmat Ali was a , a polytheist and must be killed in order to establish Islam.
On July 30, 2016, the investigating officer of the case submitted the charge sheet to the court. On March 18, 2018, the court sentenced death penalty to seven people and fined each Tk 20,000 in the murder case.
All the convicts except Abdur Rahman were arrested and are currently in jail. Chandu Mia remained on the run for a long time.
The accused Abdur Rahman confessed being an active member of the Isaba group of the banned outfit JMB in interrogation. Names of several JMB members were also revealed from the interrogation who are currently operating secretly, the release said.
Legal steps are underway to produce the accused before court, said the press release.
