Police detained journalist Abu Jafar Surya along with more than 100 others during a raid on the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad) office in Gulistan on Saturday afternoon.
The police raid was conducted following intelligence reports of a secret meeting involving leaders and activists of the Awami League, police said.
Paltan police launched the operation at the JaSad office at around 2;30 pm after receiving the information, said Officer-in-Charge Ariful Islam of Paltan police station.
“According to intelligence information, Awami League leaders and activists were holding a secret meeting at the JaSad office. We started the operation there after noon,” the OC said.
Abu Jafar Surya, a former leader of the Dhaka Union of Journalists, was also detained during the operation, according to sources at the station.
“He was present at the meeting. He was put into a police vehicle along with the others,” OC Ariful confirmed.
The detainees are currently being kept at the police station, he added.
The OC said more than 100 people had been detained so far and that the operation was still underway.
Police were conducting verification of those detained and would take necessary action after completing the process, he said.
