Jahangirnagar University (JU) journalists have completed a three-day training programme on multimedia, artificial intelligence (AI) and fact-checking organised by the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB).

The closing ceremony was held at 4:30pm on Sunday at the training room of the university’s Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).

The training began on September 25. On the final day, participants received training on the concept and importance of fact-checking, verification of information and images, video verification, cybersecurity and ethics in multimedia journalism.

PIB Training Coordinator Zilhaj Uddin Nipun conducted the training, which was attended by 35 campus correspondents representing different media outlets working at the university.

JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Nurul Islam attended the closing ceremony as the chief guest, while PIB Director General Faruk Wasif presided over it.

Speaking at the event, Prof Nurul Islam said technology has become closely linked to journalists’ professional work in the age of information technology.

“AI and other technologies can now create or alter images, videos and information. Journalists therefore need to master fact-checking and technology-based skills to verify information and report objectively,” he said.

The vice-chancellor urged journalists to perform their duties with honesty and objectivity, saying factual information ultimately prevails.

Presiding over the ceremony, PIB Director General Faruk Wasif said journalists need professional excellence, integrity in their narratives and strong professional skills to sustain themselves in journalism.

“Journalism is not merely a profession; it is also a responsibility to stand by people and question those in power,” he said, urging journalists to remain courageous, honest, dedicated and accountable.

He said training alone cannot make someone a good journalist, adding that a journalist develops professional capacity through personal awareness, responsibility and regular study.

JU Journalists Association President Mah Alam moderated the programme.JU Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Md Shamsul Alam, Pro Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Treasurer Professor Dr Md Sohel Rana and JU Press Club President SM Tawhid also spoke at the event.
