A union-level leader of Awami League’s (AL) youth wing Jubo League (JL) was beaten to death over a trivial matter in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj on Thursday afternoon, said police.
The deceased Nazul Islam Bhuiyan, 40, was an assistant secretary of Noagaon union unit of the JL under the upazila and also son of late Shafed Ali Bhuiyan.
He had a rod and steel business at local Dhandi Bazar.

The victim’s wife Asma Aktar said Nazrul got on an autorickshaw to go to Bhulta Gauchia market in Rupganj from Majerchar Bus Stand in the Sonargaon upazila in the afternoon.
An altercation broke out between her husband and autorickshaw driver Jakir Hossain and lineman Daiyan Miah when he got off the vehicle despite waiting for a long time as the autorickhaw was not leaving the stand without fulfilling it with passengers, she said.

At one stage of the altercation, the lineman beat up Nazurl with his stick while driver Jakir accompanied by other drivers punched and kicked him, leaving him injured critically, the wife alleged.
He was rushed to Araihazar Upazila Health Complex where physicians declared him dead upon arrival, said Mujibur Rahman, sub-inspector of Taltala police outpost under Sonargaon police station, adding that the trivial matter led to the killing.
The spot where the incident happened is between Sonargaona and Araihazar police stations, he said.

Araihazar police station’s Officer-in-Charge Ahsan Ullah said being informed they recovered the body from the upazila health complex.
The body bore marks of injuries, the police officer added.
