President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Wednesday urged lawyers to fulfill their duties to ensure good governance in the country.
He made this call in a views exchange meeting with the lawyers of Pabna District Bar.
"The government wants to ensure good governance in the country... In this regard, lawyers must fulfill their duties properly," he said.
He also said that the current government believes in the rule of law, so the independence of the country's judiciary has been ensured.
Former judge and lawyer Shahabuddin said the independence of the judiciary depends on the collaboration of judges and lawyers.
"If there is a good relationship between lawyers and judges, then the rule of law is ensured," he noted.
Addressing the lawyers, the President said, "Purity is the most needed here. Lawyers cannot assist the bench where corruption taints the society.”
Lawyers not only assist judges in their legal work but also sometimes guide them, he noted.
The President said that laws are introduced for the welfare of common people.
“It is the job of lawyers to present the law beautifully, to give a clear and correct interpretation of the law,” he said.
Pabna District Bar President Advocate Akhtaruzzaman presided over the ceremony.
Earlier, the President unveiled a portrait plaque of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at the "Bangabandhu Corner" at the Pabna District and Sessions Judge Court premises.
He visited the District and Sessions Judge Court Museum there. Earlier, when the President reached the court premises, senior judges led by District and Sessions Judge Begum Shamim Ahmed welcomed him with flowers.
The President visited the "Freedom Fighter Shahabuddin Chuppu Amusement Park".
