A legal notice has been served to National Citizen Party (NCP) Senior Joint Convener Nasiruddin Patwary, asking him to withdraw his remarks about Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee and issue a public, unconditional apology within 15 days.
Supreme Court lawyer Md Yasin Arafat (Samrat) sent the notice on Tuesday on behalf of Advocate Mahmudur Rahman Mission Bhuiyan, assistant office secretary of Lakshmipur district Swechchhasebak Dal and joint convener of the organisation's municipal unit.
According to the notice, Nasiruddin Patwary made objectionable and baseless comments about Anee while addressing a public rally in Dhaka recently.
The notice described the remarks as false, fabricated and politically motivated, alleging that they had damaged the minister's personal dignity and social reputation.
It said the speech was broadcast on October 30 by Channel 24 and several other media outlets, online news portals and social media platforms.
The notice also stated that Anee was a Member of Parliament from the Lakshmipur-3 (Sadar) constituency and a politician with an unblemished reputation.
Citing Sections 499 and 500 of the Penal Code, 1860, the notice claimed that the remarks constituted defamation.
It warned that failure to withdraw the remarks and issue an unconditional public apology within 15 days of receiving the notice would prompt legal action under the existing laws.
