Masked miscreants hacked a local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader to death in Talpukur area under Sadar upazila of Nagaon last night.
The deceased, Kamal Ahmed (60), was joint convenor of ward-9, Sadar municipality unit of BNP, confirmed the municipality unit’s member secretary Mizanur Rahman Mizan.
Moreover, Kamal was the organising secretary of the district’s Nazrul Academy and a member of the district committee of BNP’s cultural wing Jatiyatabadi Samajik Sangskritik Sangstha.
Police and locals said the BNP leader, accompanied by others, was heading to a house in Rajakpur area from Bogura’s Adamdighi by a battery-run easy bike around 9 pm last night.
Six to seven miscreants wearing masks and helmets, riding three motorbikes, obstructed the easy bike and dragged Kamal out when the vehicle reached Talpukur area. Other passengers fled the scene, according to the witnesses.
At one stage, the miscreants hacked Kamal with an axe and hit him on the head with an iron rod, leaving him critically injured.
Hearing screams, locals rushed to the spot and took him to Naogaon Sadar Hospital where physicians declared him dead upon arrival.
Several teams of police have already visited the spot and were trying to identify the accused involved with the murder.
Sadar Model Police Station’s Officer-in-charge Faisal Bin Ahsan said there were marks of injuries made by sharp weapons on the back, neck and head of the victim.
The body was sent to the morgue for autopsy.
The victim’s son Rashedul Islam Nawab filed a case accusing five to seven unnamed people in this connection last night.
Calling it a planned murder, Kamal’s family demanded justice through arrest of the killers.
