A Sylhet court on Thursday sent a madrasa teacher to jail over allegations of sexually abusing a 12-year-old child and attempting to rape him.
The accused, Matiur Rahman, an Arabic department teacher at Jamia Madania Islamia Kazirbazar Madrasa, was arrested by police and produced before the court in the morning.
The mother of the child, a resident of Ghasitula Lamapara in Sylhet city, filed a written complaint with Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station over the incident.
According to the complaint submitted on Monday the woman alleged that her son, a student of the madrasa, had been called by teacher Matiur on different occasions over the previous month and subjected to attempts to rape him.
She alleged that the teacher took the boy to his room at around 8am on September 25, removed his clothes and attempted to rape him.
Later, The boy disclosed the matter to his maternal uncle, who informed the family.
The child was given primary treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
The boy also alleged that several teachers at the madrasa sexually abused students of his age in various ways under the pretexts of showing affection or disciplining them.
Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khan Md Moinul Zakir said Matiur was shown arrested and sent to court on Thursday morning.
The court later ordered that he be sent to jail,” he said.
The investigation into the case is underway, he added.
