A tribunal in Tangail on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to life imprisonment for violating a teenage girl in 2024.

Tangail Women and Children Repression Tribunal Judge Md Abdul Majid handed down the punishment.

The convict is Rashid Mia, 55, son of Golam Mia of Agsawali village in Mirzapur upazila of the district.

The tribunal also fined him Tk 2 lakh, in default, to suffer, two years rigorous imprisonment.

The court declared the accused to be the biological father of the child born as a result of rape and recognised the child as the accused’s legal heir.

It also ordered that the state bear the child’s maintenance expenses until the child turns 21. If the child remains unmarried after reaching the age of 21, the state will continue to bear the maintenance costs until the child’s marriage.

According to the prosecution, the convict Rashid Mia, a neighbor of the 14-year-old girl, called her into his room tactfully and violated her by tying her with gamcha (towel) on April 14, 2024.

He also threatened the girl to not to disclose the matter to anyone otherwise to face dire consequences.

On December 22, 2024, the girl gave birth to a daughter.

On February 5, 2025, the girl filed a case with Tangail Women and Children Repression Tribunal. The court asked the Mirzapur Police to take the case as FIR.

On April 30, 2025, police submitted chargesheet against Rashid.
