A 55-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death by his distant nephew following a verbal altercation in Companiganj upazila of Sylhet on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Rustam Ali, while the accused, Billal Mia, 30, was detained by police in connection with the murder.
The incident took place around 8am on an old road in the Dakkhin Burdew area of the upazila.
Police said Billal, son of Moharam Ali of Dakatibari village, told them during preliminary interrogation that Rustam, his distant uncle, had verbally abused him a few days ago, calling him mad and a cannabis addict.
Holding a grudge over the incident, Billal allegedly attacked Rustam with a traditional chopping knife when he found him alone in the morning.
Companiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Osman Gani said police recovered the body from the spot after receiving information about the incident.
The body was later sent to the morgue of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
The OC said Billal had been detained and preparations were underway to file a case over the incident.
