Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested an alleged gold smuggler along with 13 gold bars, weighing 1.158 kg, during a drive in Godkhali Bazar in Jhikargachha upazila early Friday.
The arrestee was identified as Sahab Uddin Sardar, 44, son of Yasin Sardar of Balunda village under Benapole Port Police Station.
According to the BGB, a patrol team of Benapole Border Outpost (BOP) under the Jashore Battalion (49 BGB) conducted the drive around 4:30am at the bazaar on the Jashore-Benapole highway.
During the operation, the team recovered the gold, worth Tk 2.22 crore, a motorcycle and a mobile phone from the suspect.
The gold bars were found concealed around the suspect's waist, the paramilitary force said.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect confessed that he was carrying the gold bars from Dhaka to smuggle them into India through Jashore.
Commanding Officer of the 49 BGB Battalion Lt Col Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan said the recovered gold bars were seized and the suspect was handed over to Jhikargachha Police Station following the filing of a case against him.
