A man was hacked to death by his elder brother in Gowainghat upazila on Saturday noon, shortly after filing a rape complaint against his nephew.
The deceased was identified as Kalim Ullah, 55, son of the late Tuti Mia of Lafnaut Dighirpar village in Alirgaon Union. Saifullah.
Locals said a daughter of victim Kalim Ullah was allegedly raped by Zuber Ahmed, 18, son of his brother Sayfullah. The matter came to light last Monday.
Following failure of local mediation (salish), the victim and her father filed a written rape complaint at Gowainghat Police Station on Saturday.
After receiving the complaint, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Gowainghat Police Station immediately sent a police team to arrest Zuber Ahmed.
When the police arrived, they learned that Zuber was working in the fields in the haor. Later, Kalim Ullah, accompanied by police members, headed towards the haor.
At that time, Sayfullah allegedly came from behind with a sharp weapon and attacked Kalim Ullah, leaving him critically injured.
He was later rescued and taken to Gowainghat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors on duty declared him dead.
Omar Faruq Morol, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gowainghat Police Station, said the body had been kept at the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Sayfullah’s other son, Amir Uddin, 26, was arrested for alleged involvement in the incident.
Efforts are underway to arrest the other accused involved.
