An eight-year-old boy was found dead in a Kashbon in Sadarpur upazila of Faridpur on Monday, three days after he went missing from a local fair.
The deceased was identified as Shahadat Hossain, son of Abdur Rashid of Chandrapara Puratan Ghat area and a student of a local madrasah.
Police recovered his decomposed body around 3:00pm from the Kashbon on the bank of the Arial Khan River under Charnasirpur union.
Meanwhile, locals caught five individuals suspecting their involvement in the incident and gave them a good beating before handing them over to police.
According to the victim's family, Shahadat went missing on Friday while visiting a fair organised at the trawler terminal near the Chandrapara Darbar.
On Monday afternoon, a worker at a fairground swing ride installed at the fair, identified as Yasin, 18, reportedly telephoned victim's sister Rowshan Ara and informed her of the location of the body.
Acting on the information, family members went to the spot, found the body and alerted police. Yasin has been absconding since the incident.
Following the recovery, local people detained the owner of the swing ride and several workers, beat them and handed them over to police.
The detainees were identified as Delwar Bepari, Tamim Molla, Riaz, Jihad Mahmud and Shakil Islam.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Bhanga Circle) Md Rezaul Dipu and Officer-in-Charge of Sadarpur Police Station Md Abdul Al Mamun Shah visited the scene.
The OC said the body was sent to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
"We are investigating the incident with utmost importance. Five suspects were handed over to police by local people. Those involved in the killing will be identified and brought to justice," he said.
