Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday said Bangladesh and Russia will mark the 55th anniversary in January 2027 with specific agreements, as they discussed the steps that can be taken in the trade, economic, cultural, military, and military-technical spheres.

"We have a long-standing history of relations which will mark their 55th anniversary in January 2027," he said.

At the bilateral meeting in Moscow, Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and his Russian counterpart discussed ways to further advance the bilateral relations and exchanged views on the situation in different regions around the world and discussed the UN agenda items.

The visit is taking place shortly after Dr Khalilur has been elected President of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which allowed the Russian side to address him both as Minister and President.

The Russian Foreign Minister welcomed Dr Khalilur's intent to make the General Assembly more effective and to contribute to reconstituting UN centrality in international affairs.

"You have an extensive track record of working at the UN. At one point, our tenures at the UN overlapped, and we carried out the tasks assigned to us by our respective governments," said the Russian Foreign Minister.

He said they look forward to meaningful outcomes of the 81st session of the General Assembly.

"As its future President, you will inevitably address all international political issues. The dynamics around the world are becoming increasingly tense and complex, which requires the fullest use of diplomatic skill. For our part, we will do everything we can to support you in these efforts," he added.

Foreign Minister Khalilur is now paying a three-day official visit to Moscow and is scheduled to return home on Tuesday.
