Chattogram, May 25 (UNB)- Mother fishes of different species released eggs in the Halda River, the only natural fish spawning center in South Asia.
Fishermen have initiated collecting the eggs from Friday dawn.
Generally, mother fishes release their eggs during heavy rain in the Bengali month of Chaitra and Baishakh. But the area witnessed low rainfall this year.
The indigenous fish species including Ruhi, Mrigel, Kato and Kalbaush started releasing eggs as heavy rain with thunderbolts started on Friday evening.
The authorities concerned said that egg collection rate may exceed all previous records as they have taken various supportive initiatives.
About 22,680 kg eggs were collected from Halda in 2018 while 1,680 kg in 2017, 735 kg in 2016, 2,800 kg in 2015 and 16,500 kg in 2014.
