UNB Executive Editor and founder of Solis Nahar Khan attended the World Editors Forum (WEF) Asia Chapter meeting organised by the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) in Singapore.
The meeting, held at Conrad Orchard recently, brought together editors, media executives and journalism professionals from across the Asia-Pacific region to discuss key challenges facing newsrooms and the future of journalism.
The World Editors Forum Asia Chapter is a network of editors from the Asia-Pacific region that advises WAN-IFRA on newsroom and journalism-related activities.
The meeting was chaired by Chief Content Officer, Star Media Group, Malaysia Esther Ng, with Cherilyn Ireton, Executive Director, World Editors Forum (UK), as co-chair.
The meeting discussed ways to strengthen public trust in journalism, respond to the spread of unverified information, improve newsroom planning and resource allocation, and address emerging challenges facing media organisations.
Adriaan Basson, Editor-in-Chief of News24, South Africa, delivered a presentation on building trust at his organisation and the challenges it faces.
Participants also exchanged views on how newsrooms should respond when unverified stories go viral, focusing on responsible reporting and effective responses to misinformation.
The meeting also discussed possible questions for the next State of the Asian Newsroom Report, particularly those concerning newsroom planning, staffing and resource allocation.
Another key agenda item was the formation of a core group for the WEF Asia Chapter to advise WAN-IFRA on the chapter's activities and coordinate the region's response to various programmes.
