The Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), High Commission of India, Dhaka, is organising a cultural evening titled "Nazrul Sandhya" commemorating the 50th death anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam at Chhayanaut Auditorium in Dhaka on Thursday.
The evening will feature captivating performances by renowned Nazrul Sangeet artist Fatema Tuz Zohra, distinguished Bangladeshi actor and reciter Jayanto Chattopadhyay, and acclaimed Manipuri dancer and choreographer Samina Husain Prema, Director of Bhabna Dance School.
Together, they will present a mesmerizing programme that harmoniously blends music, poetry and dance, bringing the timeless vision of Kazi Nazrul Islam to life.
High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi will grace the occasion as the chief guest, alongside prominent Nazrul artists, cultural personalities, dignitaries from the Government of Bangladesh, and representatives from various cultural organizations.
The event promises to showcase the timeless appeal of Nazrul’s poetry and music while highlighting the richness of the shared cultural heritage of India and Bangladesh, said the High Commission.
Fatima Tuz Zohra is a distinguished Bangladeshi singer and cultural personality renowned as a premier exponent of Nazrul Geeti.
Through her melodious and expressive renditions of the songs of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, she has played a vital role in preserving, popularising, and passing down this rich musical heritage to successive generations.
Her enduring dedication to the tradition has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Ekushey Padak in 2006 and the Bangla Academy Nazrul Award in 2026.
Samina Husain Prema is a renowned Bangladeshi classical Manipuri dancer, choreographer, and cultural practitioner trained at Chhayanaut and under Guru Kalavati Devi, holding degrees from the University of Dhaka and Rabindra Bharati University.
In 2007, she founded the dance organisation Bhabna and has choreographed acclaimed productions like Bhanushingher Padaboli, Shakuntala, and Rhythm of Bangladesh.
A Bangladesh Television-enlisted artist since 2000, she has received numerous national and international awards while representing Bangladesh at major cultural festivals across India, the USA, UAE, Turkey, China, Myanmar, South Korea, and Russia, making significant contributions to the promotion of Manipuri dance and national heritage.
Jayanto Chattopadhyay is a prominent Bangladeshi actor, reciter, and cultural personality with a distinguished career spanning over five decades.
He pursued his higher education in India, graduating in English Literature from the University of Calcutta. Renowned for his versatile performances in acclaimed films like Tareque Masud’s Matir Moina and Ghetuputra Komola, as well as memorable portrayals in Trishna and Karagar, he is widely celebrated across Bangladesh as a master recitation artist.
