The Nepalese Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari on Sunday called on Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo and discussed various issues of mutual interest, including regional climate cooperation.
During the meeting held at the minister’s Secretariat office, both sides exchanged views on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, and mitigating the impacts of climate change, according to a PID handout.
He expressed deep condolences at the loss of lives in the recent tragic accident in Nepal and conveyed sincere condolences to the grieving families.
Wishing the injured a speedy recovery, he said the government and people of Bangladesh stand by the government and people of Nepal during this sorrowful time.
He also mentioned that Bangladesh is prepared to continue providing humanitarian assistance and cooperation as needed.
The Minister said, “Although Bangladesh and Nepal face different types of climate change risks, their environments and ecosystems are closely interconnected.”
“Changes in Himalayan glaciers, heavy rainfall, and floods severely impact the entire South Asian region's environment and livelihoods,” he added
He stressed the importance of regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and joint initiatives ahead of the upcoming COP-31 conference to tackle these common challenges.
Ambassador Bhandari expressed Nepal’s keen interest in expanding cooperation with Bangladesh to tackle climate change, emphasizing capacity building, technology transfer, and mutual support for eco-friendly development initiatives.
The envoy also expressed his profound gratitude to the Bangladesh Prime Minister for showing solidarity and extending a helping hand following the recent accident in Nepal, terming the gesture a reflection of deep-rooted friendship and mutual trust between the two peoples.
Beyond climate and environmental issues, the two sides discussed boosting bilateral cooperation in trade, connectivity, tourism, education, and renewable energy.
Both parties agreed that strengthening regional connectivity and expanding cooperation in clean and renewable energy will play a crucial role in achieving green and sustainable development across South Asia.
