One of the five students, who were injured in an electrocution incident at a residential girls’ madrasah in Fatullah of Narayanganj on September 26, died in a Dhaka hospital on Tuesday.

Dr Sultan Mahmud Shikdar, resident surgeon at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said 11-year-old Atiya succumbed to her injuries around 5:30pm while undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit (ICU).

He said Atiya suffered electric flash burns covering around 45 percent of her body.

Two other students -- Jidni, 14, and Lamia, 13 -- are in critical condition in the ICU, the doctor said.

The incident occurred at Mahela Khatun Mohila Madrasah in the Kashipur Hajipara area of Fatullah.

The other injured students were identified as Sumaiya, 13, and Asia, 12. All five are residential students of the madrasah.

According to witnesses, the students were playing on the third-floor roof of the madrasah building between 4:30pm and 5:00pm on September 26 when they were apparently exposed to electricity from a nearby high-tension power line and transformer.

Witnesses heard a loud noise and felt a burst of heat, after which the students suffered burns and lost consciousness.

They were rescued and first taken to a local hospital and later shifted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery as their conditions worsened.

Dr Shikdar said Jidni suffered burns to 82 percent of her body, Lamia 55 percent, Sumaiya 13 percent and Asia 7 percent.
