Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has approved Tk 3 crore in financial assistance for the Christian community to celebrate Christmas, raising the proposed grant by Tk 1 crore.
The Christian Religious Welfare Trust sought Tk 2 crore for the celebration of Christmas, the biggest religious festival of the Christian community.
The Prime Minister approved the higher allocation on Monday after receiving a summary from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, said PM’s Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu.
The money will be allocated from the Prime Minister’s Relief and Welfare Fund through the Ministry of Religious Affairs to support the celebration of Christmas on December 25.
The ministry's proposal said the Christian Religious Welfare Trust would undertake various religious and social welfare activities across the country marking the festival.
The summary sought the Prime Minister’s approval for allocating Tk 2 crore to the trust from the relief and welfare fund.
Tarique, however, directed that Tk 3 crore be provided.
