Bagerhat, Nov 1 (UNB) - Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina declared the Sundarbans, world’s largest mangrove forest and UN World Heritage Site, free of criminal gangs after the last remaining pirate gangs surrendered on Thursday.
PM made the announcement appearing at a programme where a total of 58 pirates surrendered before Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at the Sheikh Helaluddin Stadium in Bagerhat via video link in the morning.
Home Minister said members of six gangs surrendered today, and the Sundarban has been declared robber free thanks to the skills of elite force Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
The surrendered six robber gangs were – Sattar Bahini, Sharif Bahini, Siddique Bahini, Toibur Bahini, Anwarul Bahini and Alamin Bahini.
The robbers submitted 58 local and foreign fire arms, to go with 3,351 rounds of ammunition.
