Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday inquired after the condition of BNP Standing Committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah, who is undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital.
On the Prime Minister's instructions, his personal physician Dr Anam Monowarul Quadir (Bitu) visited the veteran BNP leader at the hospital.
"I came to see Sir on the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. I spoke to the doctors in charge and learned in detail about the overall progress of his treatment," he said.
Bitu said he also conveyed the Prime Minister's message wishing Rafiqul Islam Miah a speedy and full recovery.
"The Prime Minister has expressed deep concern over the illness of a veteran politician, former minister and a person who has made significant contributions to the country and its people. Following his instructions, we discussed with the attending physicians to ensure the best possible treatment," he said.
"We pray for Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah's speedy and complete recovery and have conveyed our sincere sympathies to his family members," Bitu added.
Rafiqul Islam Miah was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Evercare Hospital a few days ago after he suddenly fell ill. He has since been shifted to a cabin, where he is continuing treatment.
He has been suffering from serious health complications since 2018 and has remained bedridden for a long period.
The former minister has been battling multiple illnesses, including a fractured spinal bone.
His wife, late Shahida Rafique, a former teacher at the University of Dhaka and a member of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council, died on March 2 last year.
Rafiqul Islam Miah is currently receiving treatment under Dr Ziaul Haque at Evercare Hospital.
