A sub-inspector of the Government Railway Police (GRP) was assaulted by a group of people in Narayanganj city on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 5 pm beside the Dhaka–Narayanganj railway line in the Ukilpara area, said Mohammad Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station.
The injured officer was identified as Md Mizan, who is posted at the Narayanganj Railway Police Outpost.
Another man who was with him was also beaten, though his identity could not be confirmed.
According to police, the railway police officer was on routine patrol along the railway line when he detained two individuals along with cannabis.
At that time, several associates of the detainees allegedly attacked the officer and assaulted him.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehdi said two constables were also part of the patrol team but were standing some distance away during the incident.
“GRP members usually do not carry firearms, so they could not resist the attack,” he said, adding that the matter is under investigation and legal action will be taken.
Meanwhile, locals alleged that the police officer and another man, believed to be a police informant, attempted to detain two youths on false allegations of drug involvement and tried to put them into a vehicle.
A video that circulated on social media shows several youths beating the uniformed police officer and another man wearing a T-shirt.
In the video, a youth identifying himself as Ramzan, a hosiery factory worker, claimed that he and another acquaintance were stopped and searched by the officer and his informant while they were on their way to shop for Eid.
He alleged that although nothing was found on them, they were handcuffed and attempts were made to force them into a vehicle.
The injured SI is currently receiving treatment at Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital, police said.
