Dhaka Metropolitan Police ( DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman on Saturday said strict action will be taken if anyone is involved in extortion or influence in buying and selling of animal hides.
Besides, the Commissioner also said that police will provide security for the collection, storage and marketing of the rawhides of the sacrificial animals of holy Eid-ul-Azha.
The DMP Commissioner came up with the remarks while addressing in a coordination meeting with the stakeholders on collection of sacrificial animal hides, safety of vehicles carrying raw hides and traffic management at DMP Headquarters on Saturday.

The top officer of the DMP said, we have strict vigilance to ensure that no one can create a syndicate in buying and selling leather. Extortion or influence in the buying and selling of sacrificial animal skins will be dealt with strictly, he added.
He said that raw-hides will not be allowed to be sold on bridges or roads in Jatrabari, Hazaribagh, Newmarket, Gabtali and other areas on the day of Eid. Intelligence surveillance will be enhanced to ensure that salt prices do not rise and create an artificial crisis, he added.
In response to a question from journalists after the coordination meeting, the DMP Commissioner said that every year about one crore people from Dhaka go to their village homes to celebrate Eid with their loved ones. At that time houses, roads, offices and courts are empty. Every year the police is able to keep Dhaka safe by providing adequate security. This time too, the police have taken comprehensive security measures. These include checkpoints, patrols, foot patrols and intelligence surveillance. Along with that, there is one or two guards in every house, they will also perform duties in coordination with us.
Salted rawhides collection starts Thursday
In response to a question regarding measures taken to stop the smuggling of sacrificial skins, the DMP Commissioner said that checkposts and police patrols will be installed at the exit points of Dhaka to prevent the smuggling of raw skins. Only raw-hides carrying vehicles can reach Hemayetpur via Gabtali.
