Salauddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station, said several hundred workers of ‘Zara Jeans Factory’ took to the streets and put up barricades in front of Sony Cinema Hall around 9:20 am.
Vehicular movement in Mirpur Zoo Road and Mirpur-10 crossing towards Mirpur-1 crossing came to a complete halt due to the blockade, causing immense sufferings to commuters.
Later, factory owners were taken to the factory in the afternoon to resolve the problem.
After getting assurance from the factory authorities, the workers withdrew their demonstration after 5:30pm, the OC said.
The management closed the factory suddenly on September 11 without paying two months’ (July-August) salaries.
The workers started demonstration from Sunday morning as they did not get any assurance from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to resolve the problem.
