Members of the Bangladesh Coast Guard arrested a leader of a robber gang along with arms and ammunition from the Sundarbans in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat district on Monday night.
The arrestee was Md Abdus Samad Molla, 35, second-in-command of notorious gang ‘Chhoto Sumon’
Tipped off, a team of Coast Guard conducted a drive as part of their ongoing ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’ around 11 pm and arrested Abdus Samad from Shukunda Bazar in Rampal upazila, said media officer of Coast Guard, Lt Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon on Tuesday.
Later, based on information provided by the arrestee, Coast Guard members conducted another drive around 2:00am on Tuesday in Nandabala canal area of the Sundarbans under Mongla Police Station and recovered one single-barrel gun, one air gun and two rounds of live cartridges from the spot.
Such operations will continue to make the Sundarbans completely free of pirates, he said.
