Preparations for the Narayanganj city polls started well ahead and things have gone well so far, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said Wednesday.
This election will set an example for the upcoming ones, he added.
Nurul Huda was addressing a meeting with election officials, the law enforcers, and authorities in Narayanganj ahead of the January 16 voting.
"I have found nothing wrong in the run-up to the Narayanganj City Corporation polls," he told the media earlier in the day, following a discussion with presiding officers at Morgan Girls School and College in Deobhog, Narayanganj.
However, electioneering in the Narayanganj city polls has hotted up as the two major mayor hopefuls have accused each other of ruining the election atmosphere.
Awami League (AL) nominee Selina Hayat Ivy alleged that her rival Taimur, an independent candidate and also a BNP leader, was making baseless allegations about the election environment.
Member of Parliament Shamim Osman Monday said, "The game will be on and we will win it on January 16."
Following his announcement, most of the AL leaders, activists in Narayanganj were seen in full campaign mode for Ivy, who has served as mayor since 2011.
However, the twice-elected mayor - the first time against AL-backed Shamim Osman - said on the same day that "it has become clear from Taimur's activities that he is the candidate nominated by Shamim Osman."
This was the same claim she made earlier, that ruffled feathers in the AL high command and forced Shamim Osman to come out and clarify his stance ahead of the election.
