Five mayoral aspirants in the Sylhet City Corporation election among eight have lost their deposits for not getting enough votes.
According to election rules, they are losing their deposits because they did not get one-eighth of the valid votes in the results.
The mayoral candidates who lost their deposits are Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Mahmudul Hasan (hand fan), independent candidate Abdul Hanif Kutu (horse), independent candidate Mohammad Salauddin Rimon (cricket bat), Zaker Party's Zahirul Alam (rose) and independent candidate Mostaq Ahmed Rauf Mostafa (deer).

The voting was held from 8:00 m to 4:00 pm on Wednesday. The results were announced at night.
AL candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury emerged victorious bagging 1,19,991 votes. His nearest rival Jatiya Party's Nazrul Islam Babul got 50,862 votes while independent candidate Mohammad Shah Jahan Miah (Bus) got 29,688 votes.

Among the candidates who lost their deposits, Mahmudul Hasan (hand fan) of Islami Andolan got 12,794 votes, Abdul Hanif Kutu (horse) got 4,296 votes, Mohammad Salauddin Rimon (cricket bat) got 2,648 votes, Independent Zahirul Alam (Rose) got 3,405 votes and Independent Mostaq Ahmed Rauf Mostafa (deer) got 2,959 votes.
However, Maulana Mahmudul Hasan of Islami Andolan Bangladesh boycotted the election.
