State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has underscored the current government’s renewed efforts to highlight the Rohingya crisis in various regional and multilateral fora.
A delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed by Shama Obaed, paid an official visit to Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday and emphasised working in a coherent manner to support the government policy of ensuring the safe, dignified, and sustainable return of Rohingyas to their ancestral home.
They visited the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar National (FDMN) camps located at Ukhiya upazila and observed the humanitarian service delivery system in the camps.
Since the BNP government took office, this was the first high-level visit from the Foreign Office to the Rohingya camps, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The team visited WFP food distribution outlets, schools for Rohingya children, a hospital operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), and a UNIQLO plant run by Rohingya women in Kutupalong.
The State Minister also held an interactive session with the elected representatives of the Rohingya community, including the youth and women members.
She listened to their voices with due empathy and assured them of providing possible support on behalf of Bangladesh government to improve their quality of life in the camps as well as creating a congenial atmosphere for their dignified and safe return to Rakhine State.
In the afternoon, the State Minister graced a stakeholder consultation at the RRRC office in Cox's Bazar.
Relevant government officials and representatives from security agencies, the UN, NGOs, and INGOs participated in the consultation.
The State Minister thanked all the officials and representatives for their relentless service for the betterment of the distressed Rohingyas.
After the meeting, she briefly met the local press and informed them about her day-long activities in Cox's Bazar and the policy priorities of Bangladesh government related to this protracted humanitarian crisis.
