Today is the sixth death anniversary of freedom fighter Md Imamul Kabir Shanto, founding chairman of Shanto-Mariam Foundation and Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology.
Shanto passed away on May 30, 2020 after contracting COVID-19 while undergoing treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
A successful entrepreneur, educationist and noted social worker, he dedicated his life to promoting vocational education and employment opportunities in post-war Bangladesh, according to a press release.
Shanto established a number of institutions, including Shanto-Mariam Foundation, Shanto-Mariam University of Creative Technology, Sundarban Courier Service (Pvt) Ltd, Daily Ajker Prottasha, Shanto-Mariam Academy of Creative Technology, Shanto-Mariam Institute of Creative Technology, Shanto-Mariam School of Creative Technology, and Shantonibas, a rehabilitation centre for children and the elderly.
He also founded several mosques, madrasahs and orphanages.
Marking the occasion, various programmes were organised, including floral tributes at his grave, Quran recitation and special prayers.
