Members of the Hijra or third gender community in Sherpur Sadar upazila on Wednesday demanded training and respectable jobs that will help them contribute to the country’s economy.
Hijra Kalyan Songstha organised a discussion programme at Sherpur Government College in the morning.
Leaders of the community said they live a miserable life as they don’t have any employment.
They have to beg to earn a living although they have the right to lead a normal life as other people in the society.
Additional Superintendent of Police Aminul Islam, who attended the programme, said: “We want to organise training for member of the third gender community for regular jobs and provide them with government benefits.”
But they must have interest and initiatives regarding this, he added.
Bangladesh officially recognised Hijras as third gender in November 2013.
