Spanish Ambassador to Bangladesh Gabriel Maria Sistiaga Ochoa de Chinchetru on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram at the latter’s office in the city.
During the meeting, various bilateral issues, including bilateral ties between Bangladesh and Spain, trade, investment and readymade garment export, as well as energy crisis were discussed.
Citing that Bangladesh and Spain enjoy a very excellent friendly relation, the Speaker said the European Union is the second largest export destination for Bangladeshi goods.
The government of Spain can contribute significantly to the economic growth of Bangladesh by raising their investment here, he said.
Noting that the latest parliamentary election was held in free, fair and participatory manners, Hafiz Uddin said the EU and other countries across the world sent observer teams in the election and played the role in the restoration of democracy by making the polls credible.
In the meeting, both sides stressed the importance of boosting foreign direct investment from the European Union as Bangladesh prepares for its transition to a middle-income country.
They also exchanged views on strengthening people-to-people contacts between the two countries.
