The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Home Ministry on Thursday called for stronger and coordinated efforts to eliminate drugs, curb crime and further improve the country’s law and order situation and public security.
The call came at the first meeting of the committee of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad, held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with committee chairman Zainul Abedin, MP, in the chair.
The meeting identified drugs and gambling as among the country’s major problems and stressed effective measures to eliminate them. It also called for increased public awareness and a more effective and coordinated role by all concerned in combating drugs, says a press release .
The meeting was informed that the Home Ministry has already taken several measures to curb drugs, including conducting mobile courts and establishing tribunals and courts with jurisdiction.
The committee also reviewed the overall law and order situation and measures taken to ensure public security. A presentation on the overall activities of the Home Ministry was made before the committee.
It was informed at the meeting that complete transparency had been maintained in police recruitment over the past six months without any political influence or partisan approach.
The meeting was also informed about the sector-wise allocation and expenditure plans of the Ministry and its subordinate agencies for the 2026-27 fiscal year, as well as detailed sector-wise budget and expenditure allocations for all agencies under the ministry for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2027.
The ministry’s total proposed budget for FY2026-27 is Tk 31,099 crore, including Tk 28,638.79 crore as operating budget and Tk 2,460.21 crore as development budget.
The committee stressed the need for continued necessary support and effective oversight to ensure improved law and order, public security, drug control and crime prevention.
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, MP; Parliamentary Whip Rakibul Islam, MP; Parliamentary Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu, MP; Mir Shah Alam, MP; Md Kamruzzaman, MP; Md Monwar Hossain, MP; Shirin Sultana, MP; Md Nurul Islam, MP; and Md Abdul Baten, MP, attended the meeting.
The senior secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, inspector general of police, directors general of departments under the ministry, a brigadier general and other senior officials, heads of relevant agencies, and concerned officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were present.
